Course overview

During the PMVA Refresher Training Course, candidates will refresh their knowledge of key theoretical modules covering primary and secondary interventions while demonstrating their ongoing competency in essential Breakaway and Physical Intervention skills.

This 1-day refresher programme is designed to help professionals maintain their existing PMVA knowledge, improve confidence in managing challenging situations, and ensure their skills remain aligned with current BILD ACT Certification and Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards.

Who Is This Course For?

The PMVA Refresher Training Course is suitable for professionals working across:

  • Healthcare settings
  • Social care environments
  • Education settings
  • Prison and correctional facilities

This course is specifically designed for individuals who already hold a valid 3-5 day BILD ACT Certified PMVA training certificate that includes the GSA Skills Modules.

Candidates must meet the prerequisites established by RRN Training Standards before attending this refresher course.

Due to the physical nature of the training, candidates must be able to safely lower themselves to the floor and rise unaided. Pregnant candidates cannot attend this course, and post-natal learners should seek advice from their GP before participation.

Candidates should wear suitable clothing suitable for practical activities, such as tracksuit bottoms, trainers, and a t-shirt.

Legal and Framework Requirements

The PMVA Refresher Training Course is aligned with current legal requirements and recognised training frameworks for managing violence, aggression, and restrictive practices.

Legal Requirements

Under the Use of Force Act 2018, PMVA training provided to staff supporting individuals within mental health, healthcare, social care, and education environments must align with the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards.

Framework Requirements

HealthTrust Europe (HTE) and Workforce Alliance require restrictive practice training for temporary staff working within specialist healthcare provisions to be delivered by certified training providers aligned with the RRN Training Standards.

What Are the RRN Training Standards and BILD ACT?

The Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards were developed following concerns around the inappropriate use of restrictive physical interventions within healthcare settings.

The standards focus on:

  • Reducing the use of restrictive practices
  • Promoting prevention and early intervention
  • Supporting effective de-escalation techniques
  • Protecting human rights and improving the safety of individuals receiving care

BILD ACT provides certification for organisations delivering training aligned with the RRN Training Standards, ensuring programmes meet recognised quality and safety requirements.

Why Attend This PMVA Refresher Training Course?

The PMVA Refresher Training Course supports healthcare professionals in maintaining their statutory training requirements and ensuring continued competence in managing challenging behaviour and aggression.

For independent candidates, completing this refresher course provides evidence of updated PMVA competency and supports career opportunities across healthcare organisations, NHS Trusts, recruitment agencies, and private care providers.

Candidates who successfully complete the training receive updated certification that demonstrates their continued commitment to safe and effective violence prevention and management practices.
